Neil's experience with “Slipper” Smith, the teacher who humiliated him in front of his classmates illustrates lucidly the need for teachers to be aware of the long term impact on the lives of children of derogatory comments or punishments. This is an outstanding book, which is greatly enhanced by the “Reflective points to ponder” at the end of each chapter. Many of the points raised highlight key issues for staff development. This is a key book for all aspiring teachers, support staff, school leaders and governors.
