Terri Bodell, Deputy Chair, National Assoc of Counsellors, Hypnotherapists and Psychotherapists
This is Jay Haley at his best. Ordeal Therapy gives insight into the theory behind the therapy as well as offering detailed case studies as examples of how to use it. Haley gives a wealth of knowledge and strategies that can be used with clients during therapy and also demonstrates the pitfalls to watch out for. This is a very ethical and moral approach to ordeal therapy and gives therapists a solid understanding of how to design a positive ordeal to elicit the desired changes in the client.
It is a very easily readable book, clear, comprehensive and unambiguous. Haley shows how a wide variety of problems can be helped using ordeal therapy. This is certainly a very thought provoking book and I would recommend it to all working therapists, no matter their discipline.
