Peter Mattock's Visible Maths offers an excellent insight into the various strategies teachers can use to help their learners better understand and enjoy the subject of maths.
It will be a great support asset for teachers (particularly non-specialist mathematicians) as they adopt methods which break down the systems of addition, multiplication and division into more visible structures. I particularly gained from the use of counters and colours and the clear discussion of techniques with regard to addition and subtraction of negative integers - an element of maths which I found a great stumbling block in my youth.
Visible Maths should serve as a key resource for all Key Stage 2 teachers and for those secondary school practitioners seeking to boost their learners' levels of motivation in the maths classroom. It is a truly brilliant compilation of ideas geared to enable learners to visualise number and develop greater understanding.
