Product reviews for NLP for Teachers

NLP For Teachers, by Richard Churches and Roger Terry, is a fascinating and extremely accessible book: it is full of information in a highly palatable format; and the “Wow!” moments (of which there are many!) are not just because of the way in which NLP is applied here to the world of Education, but equally to an abundance of interesting anecdotes”“”. For example, how the eminent anthropologist Gregory Bateson and his research team discovered that context is just as important as behaviour to learning, by working with dolphins!

There are many books available about behaviour in the classroom, but learning at a different level - context - is more profound, because it is about “learning to learn'.

The great thing about Churches and Terry is that in this book they have beautifully mapped across the tools of NLP, plus the findings of superb minds like Bateson, not only to the way we teach our children, but, more profoundly, to the way the children learn!

This book contains all the major NLP models, like eye-accessing cues, logical levels etc., so the reader receives a full range of “WHAT to do': but the difference that makes the difference in this book is that they also get the “HOW to do it'! NLP is often called the “How technology”, and that is apparent here on every page.

There is also a section on planning and delivering your own “Instant NLP training day', which contains a whole series of training exercises.

One of the best things about this book is that it ISN'T just about the students, but about you, the teacher”“”.. who and what you are, your values and beliefs, your own state management, language, metaprograms, and so on. The authors make it clear that in order to get the best from the teacher, not only do the students have to be in the best state for learning; the teacher has also to be the best they can be!

The language in this book has chunked a complex subject to an extremely digestible level: and the book is also a delight to the Visually preferenced, with colour, many illustrations, and font variations. It also satisfies the Kinaesthetic with its smooth pages and tactile cover!

Perhaps the most impressive parts of this book are the -˜Research Zones': included in each chapter is a section which gives the provenance and background to what is contained in that part of the book. Before using anything with students, the Education profession likes to know what is proven or not - who found out, and how, when, and where! Here we are given explicit data on the research, the researchers, their work, and the dates they were published.

As teachers reading and applying the contents of this book, we can not only see the research behind the models and techniques, and associated information; we can confidently use what we have discovered here, to add our own first-hand knowledge of them to the Education world.

In our many years experience taking New Oceans NLP trainings and coaching into Primary, Secondary, Further, and Higher Education in the U.K. and the Middle East, as well as our specialist field of working with children with unique learning requirements, both gifted and challenged, we have found the NLP tools, models, and processes to be hugely influential.

The feedback we are constantly receiving in our own NLP in Education work is that for teachers to know and use, for example, spatial anchoring in the school, to know and use perceptual positions, as we do in nine positions for changing state, is not only powerfully effective, it is a revelation and a joy, for both teachers and students!

So we highly recommend this book to every Education professional who wants access to a set of tools that really work! - NLP - and who desires to grow their teaching. And - perhaps even more importantly - who really wants to rediscover what learning is truly about.
